Fall has arrived, and before we know it we’ll be getting all dolled up for a barrage of holiday parties. Lest we show up looking like the ghost of Christmases past, we checked in with a few local makeup pros to ask about fall and winter makeup trends for this season.
Makeup artist Jenny Patinkin is the founder of Dollface Beauty School. This fall and winter, “it’s all about bare baked beauty: radiant skin that’s minimally covered, nude lip colors, and minimal-but-still-impactful eye makeup,” she says.
For the new season, she’s digging the new Hourglass Les Femmes Nude Lip Stylos, available at Barneys. The lip crayons come in subtle hues such as shimmering golden peach, honey beige, and palest pink; “they’re non-drying, long-wearing, and are in a range of colors that suit everyone,” she says.
Patinkin also crafts her own line of super-luxe makeup brushes, which she created to work with her “Lazy Perfection” makeup method. The idea for the brushed is that women should have a quick, expert way to apply makeup so it doesn’t take up too much of their busy schedule.
Handmade by Japanese artisans using soft, natural hairs, the brushes hit the skin with a gossamer-light touch—perfect for the wintertime, when anything harsh is a big no-no. Available online, the brushes are sold piece-by-piece; there are also 5-brush and 10-brush sets that contain tools like the Large Domed Powder Brush and the cutely named Kitten-Paw Multi Brush.
Chicago-born makeup artist Susie Lee has prettied up the likes of Taylor Swift and Chanel Iman; she’s also the founder of the all-natural makeup line Echo Vie. In the world of all-natural makeup, Lee says there’s a movement toward embracing a larger range of colors that fall outside the nude look.
“I do think that all-natural beauty lines are getting so much better with the quality and the color choices,” she says. “Some color lines that are really beautiful right now are RMS Beauty, ILIA, and Josie Maran, to name a few.”
Winter and fall makeup looks
For fall and winter, Lee cites matte-orange and burgundy lips along with smoky, winged eyes as the major trends. Some of her favorite products to capture those looks? Lee loves the ILIA lipstick in Voila, available at Space519, and Bare Escentuals eye color in Velvet Blueberry or Velvet Violet, available at Ruby Room. RMS Beauty products are also available at Space519, which stocks the line’s popular Beauty Oil; Sephora is among the stores to carry Josie Maran Cosmetics.
Carrie Lannon, the director of public relations at ULTA Beauty, says: “fall is a great time to have fun with rich pops of color. Try a purple or emerald eye shadow with a more neutral lip.”
In general, trends for eyes are: “metallic lids, megawatt lashes,” and violet shades, Lannon says. To capture the glam gaze, she recommends ULTA’s Raincoat Waterproof Mascara Topcoat. It “instantly waterproofs and protects mascara for an all-day, dependable look,” she says. “It’s perfect for snowy Chicago winters.”
For the lips, Lannon uses Maybelline’s Baby Lips to stay hydrated in the cool weather. For a more dramatic look, she suggests getting a “plum pout” by layering lipstick shades of plum, wine, and berry.
