Most of us are familiar with the turmoil of winter skin. But for almost every ailment, there’s a cure that can be slathered on. So, which products should be mandatory buying for Chicagoans this winter? We asked a few local skincare pros to weigh in.
Basic winter skin care begins with a simple step, keeping the air in your home from becoming too dry. Using a humidifier at night to hydrate skin, and exfoliating your face once a week with a gentle product such as Arcona Golden Grain Gommage helps skin stay moist explains Susie Lee, founder of the Echo Vie all-natural skincare line.
She also suggests moisturizing the face immediately after washing it. Lee uses Arcona Magic White Ice in the morning, and switches to JASÖN Vitamin E Oil in the evening. (Arcona products are available locally at Ruby Room; Jason products are sold at drugstores.)
From her own product line, Lee says that the Organic Body Oil is great for winter.
“Of course, the oil your skin produces is the best moisturizer,” she says. “The sesame oil and jojoba-base oils in the Organic Body Oil mimic the sebum that your skin naturally produces. So it soaks right in, instead of sitting at the top of your skin, and does not leave a greasy film. It really makes an immediate difference in the moisture level of your skin.”
Finally, Lee says: “don’t forget the lips!”
She brushes her lips gently with a toothbrush to exfoliate them, and then applies lip balm.
But if you crave something to improve your skin as well as your spirits during the winter, Sam Salwierak, store manager of Lush Cosmetics at Westfield Old Orchard, suggests something similar to the store's Olive Branch Shower Gel.
The shower gel has skin-softening, fair-trade olive oil along with enzymatic citrus oils like mandarin, lemon and bergamot, “which are not only great on the skin but uplifting to the mood,” Salwierak says (always a bonus when fighting off the winter blues).
Makeup offers another easy spot to add extra moisture into your routine. For winter skincare, makeup artist Jenny Patinkin of Dollface Beauty School loves By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-primer, which is available at Barneys and at Arch Apothecary in Old Town.
“I recommend [it] to plump fine lines and give added hydration during colder weather, when the skin can start to look dull,” she says. “The product adds a natural radiance to the skin, and can be worn alone or under your foundation.”
Lastly, for those looking to keep their skin not only moist, but tan after summer, Carrie Lannon, the PR director of ULTA Beauty, highly recommends the ULTA tinted self-tanning gel. “It goes on streak-free so you can maintain a healthy glow all season long.”
