If the stockings are hung but still empty and the tree is up but bare beneath, now is no time to fret. With extended, around-the-clock hours in some instances, last-minute gifting no longer creates issues as it has in the past.
And, just because Black Friday has come and gone, does not mean last-minute gift shoppers won't be saving money.
"The best deals at the last minute are largely inventory driven, which are often the best type of deal," says Brad Wilson, founder and editor-in-chief of BradsDeals.com, a site dedicated to tracking deals and coupons from retailers.
Wilson explains that last-minute Christmas sales will often revolve around products that retailers still have too much of come the end of the year.
"You can't count on getting a specific item because it is selective but you can count on very good deals," he said.
So for those last-minute shopping trips, it might be a good idea to have a flexible list with a few gifting options for each person.
And if you can manage to grab something seasonal, such as chocolates from Godiva or a basket from Harry & David, you might be able to score a great deal last-minute, according to Wilson.
As for where to shop for last-minute gifts?
Starting December 20 and running through Christmas Eve, Kohl's will be open 24 hours and, because the selection of products there runs the gift-giving gamut, you could literally shop Kohl's to get something for everyone on your list at once.
“The holiday season is an eventful time for families, and Kohl’s is making it easy for shoppers to wrap up their last-minute gift giving with 24-hour access to Kohl’s stores right up to Christmas Eve,” said Michelle Gass, Kohl’s chief customer officer, in a Kohl's press release announcing the extended hours.
Another large retailer to look at for last-minute gifts featuring a large selection, so you can get more shopping done at once, would be Macy's. This year, the retailer made it even easier to shop last-minute, lining up pre-selected "Star Gifts" chosen specifically by industry buyers based on mixture of new and classic gift ideas.
And, while there hasn't been any official announcement on 2013 holiday hours at Macy's just yet, the stores have been open 24 hours leading up to Christmas in past years.
If searching for specific toys, or just gifts for kids in general, Toys "R" Us will probably be your best bet. Although, don't hold out too much hope of finding hot toys last-minute in stock and on sale. However, this toy mega store price matches, even against online retailers such as Amazon (see stores for details).
Plus, if needed, busy parents will have until January 25 to return items thanks to an extended return policy for the holidays, although a receipt is necessary and there are some restrictions on electronics.
And if all else fails, even grocery stores or corner drug stores can be great places to shop for last-minute gifts -- if you have a plan and imagination. For example, you could always fall back on a nice bottle of wine, but why not put together a chili gift basket like Chicago blogger Sarah from east9thstreet.com did.
