Fun (and Healthy) St Patrick’s Day Treats for Kids

Kelly Daugherty

We love St Patrick’s Day!  And nobody loves it more than the kids.  They are dressed in green from head to toe and insist on only eating green foods.  So before you head for the sugar laden option of cookies and cakes, here are a few options that kids will love and won’t weigh them down in sugar.

Lucky Spinach Cakes

We love these little cakes and the kids don’t seem to care that there is spinach in them.  You can find the recipe here at Foodlets. And lucky you, many of the ingredients, including the spinach, is on sale this week at Joe Caputo & Sons (until 3/18).

Shamrock Smoothie

Before heading to McDonald’s for that shamrock shake, check out this recipe which calls for fruit and yogurt (skip the rum for the kids).  It is thick, yummy and a healthier option for St Patrick’s Day.  You can find the recipe here from Midwest Living.

Mini Shephard’s Pie

If you are looking for a traditional Irish meal on St Patty’s Day, try this revamped Shephard’s Pie recipe from Eating Well.  They replaced the potato topping with a squash puree and baked in ramekins you can make sure that portion control is not a problem.

Have a happy and healthy St Patrick’s Day!
