3 Foods that Help Beat Belly Bloat

Kelly Daugherty

Mother’s Day is just a week away which means — Family Pictures!  I love Mother’s Day, but am always nervous about the numerous family pictures as I am just starting to shed that winter sweater.  So while I am still getting bathing suit ready, here are a few foods that will help me to beat the bloat and get my stomach a little flatter in time for pictures.

Bananas

bananas

For the longest time I stayed away from bananas because they are high in sugar, but there are so many wonderful health benefits of bananas.  Here are a few:

  1. Rich in Potassium they help to regulate sodium levels and prevent water retention — thus no belly bloat
  2. Protect against muscle cramps
  3. Helps improve your mood due to high levels of tryptophan.  Tryptophan is converted to serotonin which induces the “happy-mood”
  4. Aids weight loss.  It helps to control blood sugar and so is the perfect between meal snack
  5. It can lower your body temperature and cool a fever.

Yogurt

Many brands of yogurt contain probiotics which aid your digestion and keep good bacteria in your tract.  The active cultures in yogurt help to keep the bloat away.  Some other health benefits of yogurt:

  1. Protein.  There is a good dose of protein in each serving which is a lower calorie option than eating meat at every meal.
  2. Weight Loss.  In a study from the University of Washington, subjects reported feeling fuller for longer than other snacks that were eaten.
  3. Helps the Gut.  The active cultures in yogurt are known to help with constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease and bloating.

Yogurt is also on sale this week at Joe Caputo & Sons (until May 7)

Cucumbers

Cucumbers help reduce swelling.  People often put cucumbers on their eyes to take away puffiness and they do the same thing in your gut.  Other health benefits include:

  1. Energy.  They contain B vitamins that are known to help give you a quick pick me up
  2. Hydrates the Body.  Since cucumbers are 95% water, they are a great way to rehydrate your body.
  3. Fights Bad breath.  Take a slice and place on the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds and it will kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath.

Have a great Mother’s Day and hope you are all picture ready.  Have a Smashing week!
